Augury After Autogogues
A solo exhibition presented as the 2024 Sasol New Signatures Winner
Augury After Autogogues takes its title from the idea of prediction ("augury"), in a future where everyone has become an "Autogogue"—a self-guided mystic relying on the sovereignty of ‘personal truth’. The exhibition playfully and satirically stages a speculative mysticism, exploring how the collapse of shared beliefs and the rise of individualized, automated interpretations shape our experience of reality. Using fabulated, interactive devices, the Autogogue sorts through the din of images, impressions, and changing contexts from everyday life and mass media. Inadvertently this reveals how old ways of understanding the world are struggling to keep up. It predicts a future were we’ll be set adrift, insulated within private cosmologies, as the complexity of information systems increasingly surpasses our capacity to endure them.
